Electronic Arts Intermix has announced a conference and series of public programs to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the pioneering conference EAI originally organized at the Museum of Modern Art in 1974, which gathered artists, theorists, curators, art administrators and critics to debate the challenges and possibilities in television and video. The new conference is titled Open Circuits Revisited. EAI is collaborating with the NYU Center for Disability Studies and Department of Media, Culture and Communication in organizing this conference.
Video and digital technologies have undergone significant changes since the 1970s. Considering these advancements and the parallel changes in the political sphere, Electronic Arts Intermix has invited professors from New York University and Stanford University to engage in a series of discussions aimed at exploring the challenges that contemporary video art faces and what some viable means of resolution could be.
The conference will unfold over the course of three days and will open with a public discussion between media scholars Fred Turner and Susan Murray about the nature of the historical relationship between video and television technologies and democracy in the United States. The second day features a book launch and reception for the EAI publication The New Television: Video after Television. The final day includes a conversation between artist-scholars Whit Pow and Alexander Galloway revolving around the topics of noise, randomness and error in contemporary media practices.
Electronic Art Intermix was established in 1971 in New York City as a non-profit resource center working to support the creation, preservation and dissemination of video art. The Center for Disability Studies at NYU promotes disability scholarship, artistry and activism by organizing public events and monthly seminars. The Department of Media, Culture and Communication at NYU specializes in the study of the role of media and technology in their social, global and cultural contexts.
Open Circuits Revisited will be held from October 17-19, 2024. If you are interested in attending the organizers advise to reserve a spot, because seating is limited. More information about this conference and other events at EAI can be found on their site.
