James Fuentes in Los Angeles is opening an exhibition of the work of famed film director Jim Jarmusch. Presented under the title some more collages, this show will be the first solo exhibition for Jarmusch in Los Angeles and the second time that his collages are being displayed in public. New lithographs created by Jarmusch will be featured alongside his newsprint collages.
Jarmusch, whose work in the field of independent cinema made him an icon, has engaged in a variety of other creative disciplines, spanning from film and visual art to poetry and music. Over the course of his career he has amassed a substantial repository of newspaper clippings which serve as an inexhaustible wellspring of material for his collages. Jarmusch has noted a resemblance between the process involved in their creation and that of automatic writing.

For Jarmusch, the medium of collage has primarily served as a vehicle for private expression; nevertheless, these spontaneous creations display the evolution of his artistic thought. His initial forays into collage exhibit the use of numerous visual sources, overlaying images from different time periods on top of one another to create a layered understanding of the total work. His newest creations depart from this philosophy, offering a more refined and simplified approach that removes the faces from the images and obscures contextual elements, opening up spaces for new narratives to seep into the voids left by his incisions.
Jarmusch's earlier collages had previously been shown with James Fuentes at his New York gallery in 2021, representing the first public exhibition of these pieces. The Los Angeles show will be open through April 26, 2025. For more about this exhibition, as well as other events at James Fuentes, visit the gallery site.
