Camden Art Centre and Fondazione In Between Art Film have commissioned Karimah Ashadu for a new moving image work. The work will be presented as part of a site-specific installation at Camden Art Centre in London. This will constitute Ashadu's first institutional solo exhibition in the UK. The project is curated by Alessandro Rabottini and Leonardo Bigazzi.
Ashadu's practice revolves around the topics of labor and self-determination as they pertain to the social, economic and cultural conditions specific to Nigeria and its diaspora. She investigates the conceptual understanding of labor and how it affects personal identity and perceptions of masculinity, as well as the formation of patriarchal society within a West African context.
This project is the second in the “Unison” series organized by the Fondazione In Between Art Film, a programme instituted for commissioning exhibitions of moving image works in collaboration with international institutions. Fondazione In Between Art Film was established by Beatrice Bulgari in 2019 with the goal of exploring time-based media through commissions, acquisitions and institutional collaborations.
Ashadu was recently awarded the Silver Lion for promising young talent at the 60th Venice Biennale. She is currently shooting Saltmine, a feature-length narrative film about a salt miner from Dakar. The exhibition is scheduled to open in October 2025 at Camden Art Centre in London. Check the Camden Art Centre site for updates. For more on Ashadu check her artist site and her Kinoki artist page.
