Art Windsor-Essex is hosting the first solo exhibition in Canada for the artist Kevin Jerome Everson, organized and presented by Media City Film Festival. The show is titled MOONSHINE: The Celestial Films of Kevin Jerome Everson, and it marks the first occasion that the internationally celebrated US artist, filmmaker, and Heinz Award recipient’s ever-growing body of astral-focussed films are presented together in their entirety.
Everson's celestial films go beyond traditional depictions, offering a fresh perspective on the sun, moon and eclipses. Using a range of techniques and formats, including 16mm and 8mm film, Everson's technical brilliance shines through in every frame.
Kevin Jerome Everson has completed more than 200 films since 1997, quietly assembling one of the most remarkable collections of contemporary African American life ever committed to cinema. He is a recipient of the Herb Alpert Award (2012), Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities (2019), Berlin Prize (2020), a Guggenheim Fellowship and American Academy in Rome Fellowship. The exhibition is curated by Greg de Cuir Jr and Oona Mosna. De Cuir is the co-founder and artistic director of Kinopravda Institute in Belgrade. Mosna is an artist, author, curator, and artistic director of Media City Film Festival since 2004.
Media City Film Festival is an international festival of film and digital art dedicated to the creation, exhibition, and dissemination of the cinematic arts in Windsor–Detroit. The festival's 26th edition will take place from 7-11 November 2023.
