The Getty has announced the third edition of its landmark arts event PST ART (formerly Pacific Standard Time), which opens in September 2024 in various institutions throughout Southern California. Organized under the theme "PST ART: Art & Science Collide", the numerous interlocking shows will take a deep dive into the various instances, both past and present, of the fields of art and science meeting and mutually influencing each other.

PST ART presents a unique opportunity for visitors to engage with a broad spectrum of topics and issues at the intersection of art and science that are relevant to the modern age, ranging from ancient cosmologies and Indigenous science fiction to environmental justice and artificial intelligence. However, as noted in an article published in The Arts Newspaper, of the more than 50 exhibitions slated to run during the course of the event only a handful will actually deal with the pressing issues of the internet and artificial intelligence, their ramifications on human creativity and the far-reaching impact that they have on human society.

REDCAT, an art space operated by California Institute of the Arts, is featuring the AI-themed exhibition All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace. This show focuses on addressing some of the critical questions surrounding AI, as well as proposing some alternative paths for its future. At the Academy Museum, the exhibition Cyberpunk: Envisioning Possible Futures Through Cinema explores how the science fiction subgenre of cinema has influenced mankind, through the differing notions of technological advancement, social disorder and dystopian visions of the future. This show looks at the twentieth century origins of science fiction and follows the varying courses it has taken in the twenty-first century, merging with Afrofuturism, Indigenous Futurism and other genres.

PST ART involves more than 70 institutions and organizations, bringing together over 818 artists across 50 exhibitions, including: Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Huntington, Hammer Museum, UCLA Film and Television Archive, Caltech, Griffith Observatory and others. Exhibition themes include experimental photography, sonic art, climate and social justice and many more.

PST ART: Art & Science Collide is open from September 15, 2024 through February 16, 2025. More information about the featured institutions and exhibitions can be found on the PST ART site.
