The Design Museum in London is preparing a major retrospective on the iconic filmmaker Tim Burton. The exhibition, titled The World of Tim Burton, will showcase over five decades of Burton's creative work, covering a broad scope ranging from sketchbooks and storyboards to paintings and photography. Viewers will be taken on a visual journey that begins with the first childhood sketches drawn by Burton through recent moving image works.

This comprehensive overview places emphasis on visual themes and motifs which recur throughout Burton's cinematic oeuvre, which imbue his characters and visual landscapes with an immediately recognizable and unique style. Apart from his iconic films such as Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, viewers will also be able to see some of Burton's lesser-known creations in illustration, writing and more.

The presentation at the Design Museum represents the culmination of a decade-long world tour, in which the exhibition has been displayed at venues such as Mori Arts Center Gallery in Tokyo, Lafayette Art and Design Center in Shanghai and the Design Museum at Dongdaemun Plaza in Seoul. The World of Tim Burton is one of two exhibitions currently presenting the artist's substantial body of work. The other, Tim Burton's Labyrinth, is showing at Radsetzerei in Berlin.

The Design Museum was established in 1989 and was awarded European Museum of the Year in 2018. The World of Tim Burton is scheduled to open on October 25, 2024. For further information on the exhibition check the Design Museum site. For more information on Burton's work check his artist site.
