Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in Vaduz is developing an exhibition with Tony Cokes that will provide a new contextual background to and interpretation of the museum's art collection. The renowned American visual artist, who was recently awarded the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, was invited by the museum with a new commission that would recontextualize its collection, shedding a new light on the meaning of the respective individual works.
Tony Cokes established himself in the world of video art with his distinctive blending of textual cues, found footage, images and pop music. Through the integration of these elements into his video installations, Cokes fashions narratives that are centered around contemporary historical and cultural phenomena, and the role that race has in shaping perceptions of culture, identity and history.

Cokes’ engagement with the aforementioned source materials along with the inclusion of journalism, social media and philosophical texts into the mix will provide the framework for the aesthetic dialogue between his new commission and existing video installations and the Kunstmuseum collection. The artist's recent interest in the history and reception of conceptual and minimal art and his deft application of remixing, dubbing, versioning and sampling impart a new perspective on the role that art plays in the public sphere.
The exhibition at Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein is organized by Letizia Ragaglia. It is scheduled to open on September 26, 2025 and will remain on view through March 1, 2026. Updates on this upcoming exhibition along with information on other events can be accessed at the Kunstmuseum site.
